The Crucifer family (Brassicaceae) is also known as the Cabbage or Mustard Family and contains just over 4,000 species worldwide, many of which are important agricultural crops. An older scientific name "Cruciferae" means "cross-bearing" and describes the four petals of the flowers which resemble a cross. The family is in the order "Brassicales".
