There are around 180,000 described species of butterflies and moths worldwide and an unknown number that have yet to be discovered.
They are members of the order Lepidoptera which translates from the ancient Greek words "lepís" and "pterón" meaning "scale wing". It is these scales that give butterflies and moths their patterns and colours and as the individual ages, the scales fade or fall off making them look worn.
